interstitial pneumonitis

interstitial pneumonitis
an alternative name for cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis (CFA), used by lung pathologists to classify the different cellular types of the disease. The most common cellular pattern is usual interstitial pneumonitis (UIP). Use of the latter abbreviation is increasing in clinical contexts: the diagnosis CFA/UIP or just UIP now often appears in hospital notes and discharge letters.
